How to read the countdown

• The big number counts calendar days, meaning how many times the date changes before Thanksgiving. On the Wednesday before, it says “Tomorrow!”
• The four boxes count the exact days, hours, minutes and seconds until midnight at the start of Thanksgiving Day, updating every second. They count only full 24-hour days, so the boxes are often one day behind the big number. At 3 PM on Monday, November 23, the big number reads 3 days while the boxes read 2 days, 9 hours.
• The line underneath gives the number of weeks, rounded up, and the date it’s counting to, such as “Thu Nov 26 2026.”
• It uses your device’s clock and time zone. If the count looks off, check your device’s date and time settings. Relatives in other time zones see their own count.
• Nothing to set up: leave the tab open, or put it on a classroom screen or TV. After Thanksgiving it moves on to the next year automatically.

Which Thanksgiving it counts to

This is US Thanksgiving, which is always the fourth Thursday of November, so it falls between November 22 and 28. The next dates are Thursday, November 26, 2026, Thursday, November 25, 2027 and Thursday, November 23, 2028. Canadian Thanksgiving is a different holiday, held on the second Monday in October (October 12 in 2026), and this counter doesn’t track it.

A countdown checklist for hosts

• 4 weeks or more: settle who’s hosting and roughly how many people are coming. Book travel early: the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are among the busiest travel days of the year. If you want a fresh turkey from a butcher, order it now.
• About 3 weeks: plan the menu and decide who brings what. A potluck sign-up sheet avoids five pies and no vegetables. Buy a frozen turkey while there’s plenty to choose from. USDA suggests about 1 lb per person, more if you want leftovers.
• About 2 weeks: check your roasting pan, meat thermometer, serving dishes, folding chairs and table space. Buy drinks and pantry staples such as flour, stock, canned pumpkin and cranberries. Print games for the afternoon, such as Thanksgiving bingo cards.
• About 1 week: work out your thawing date. A frozen bird needs about a day in the fridge for every 4 to 5 lb, so a 20 lb turkey should go in by Saturday, November 21. The turkey cooking time calculator tells you when it needs to go in the oven on the day.
• 2 to 3 days: buy fresh produce and dairy, bake pies, make cranberry sauce, chop vegetables and set the table. If the group is big, a seating chart stops the shuffle at the table.
• “Tomorrow!”: make anything that reheats well, clear fridge space for leftovers and set an alarm for the turkey’s put-in time.

Counting down with kids

• Sleeps: the big number matches the number of nights left, so children counting “sleeps until Thanksgiving” can read it straight off the screen.
• Gratitude chain: starting today, add one paper link each day with something the child is thankful for written on it. On Thanksgiving, hang the chain over the table or read the links aloud before the meal.
• Classroom warm-up: put the page on the board in the morning and ask students to turn the countdown into weeks, hours or minutes, then check their answers against the boxes.
• Kitchen helpers: give each child a small job for each day of the final week, such as writing place cards, counting chairs or decorating the table.

Keeping the week calm

Use the number as a prompt to act. When it drops below 10, look for anything that has no owner yet, such as the turkey, a side dish, extra chairs or a ride for a relative, and assign it. Most Thanksgiving stress comes from leaving the turkey too late, so the thawing date is worth setting before anything else.
