How to make and print your own gift tags

Step by step

1. Replace the example tags: the box starts with five sample lines, such as “Mom, Sarah” and “Coach Lee, Team 5”. Delete them and type your own, one tag per line.
2. Use the To, From format: write the recipient first, then a comma, then the sender. “Grandpa, Lily and Max” prints as “To: Grandpa” and “From: Lily and Max”. Only the first comma splits the line, so the From part can contain more commas: “Aunt Jo, Love, Ben” becomes “From: Love, Ben”.
3. Leave out the comma for a blank From line: a line with just a name (“Uncle Pete”) prints “From: ______” so you can sign each tag by hand. This is handy for gifts from several people, or if you’d rather sign in your own handwriting.
4. Choose how many tags fit across: under “Per row” pick 2, 3 or 4. The preview below updates as you type, so you can check how the sheet will look.
5. Tap “Print gift tags”: only the sheet of tags is printed, without the menus or text from the page.

Choosing a tag size

• 2 per row: large tags for big boxes, gift bags or anyone who needs bigger writing. They also leave space for a short handwritten note under the names.
• 3 per row: the default and a good all-round size for wrapped presents.
• 4 per row: small tags for stocking fillers, cookie tins, jars and party favors. Keep names short at this size, since long names wrap onto a second line.

Every tag gets a small holiday icon in the corner (a tree, gift, snowman, bell, star or reindeer). They rotate in that order down your list, so each line gets the next icon in turn.

Printing tips

• Paper: plain printer paper works, but light cardstock (around 160–200 g/m², or 65–110 lb) gives tags that won’t tear when you tie them on. Check that your printer can feed the paper weight you choose.
• Check the preview: in the print dialog, look at the preview before printing a full sheet. If tags are cut off at the edges, set margins to “Default” or turn off any “fit to page” setting that shrinks the sheet.
• Print a test page: print one copy on plain paper first, especially at 4 per row, to check that the names are easy to read.
• Cutting: each tag has a red dashed border, so you can follow the line with scissors. For a neat result, cut just outside the dashes. A craft knife and ruler are faster for a big batch.
• Attaching: punch a hole in the wide rounded corner at the bottom left and thread ribbon or twine through it, or stick the tag flat on the gift with double-sided tape.

Ideas for different occasions

• Family Christmas: make one line for every gift, not every person. If Grandma is getting three presents, type her line three times so each present gets its own tag.
• Secret Santa or office exchanges: write “Secret Santa” as the sender, or leave the From part out and keep the line blank, so nobody gives themselves away.
• Teachers and coaches: put the class or team as the sender (“Ms. Rivera, Room 12”), print one sheet and let the kids decorate the tags before you cut them out.
• Bake sales and homemade gifts: use the To line for the contents (“Gingerbread”) and the From line for the date or a short note, for example “Baked 12/20”.

Common problems

• The names come out the wrong way round: the part before the first comma is always “To”. If a name itself has a comma, as in “Smith, John”, rewrite it as “John Smith”.
• A tag shows up empty or with “From” only: check for a stray comma at the start of a line. Completely empty lines are skipped automatically.
• The page prints blank sheets after the tags: in the print dialog, choose a page range that covers only the pages with tags on them.
• My list is gone: the tool doesn’t save your tags. If you have a long list, keep a copy in a notes app so you can paste it back next year.
